Wellington.Scoop » Two friends in a theater performance for young children

Press release – Wonderlight Theater

wonderkind is a whole new magical theater experience for young children. It follows two newbie friends as they embark on a journey leading to ultimate discovery; that endless possibilities for wonder and joy lie in true friendship.

wonderkind is a non-verbal theater show featuring puppets, live performances, stunning scenography and a delightful original musical score. This is a high quality, visually striking children’s play presented at the Circa Theater during the July school holidays and is open for bookings from Early Childhood Education Centers in the first week of the third trimester.

This is the first performance presented by the new theater company Wonderlight Theater Aotearoa, a collective of experienced and emerging arts practitioners. As a company, they are dedicated to empowering young people, not only by creating high-quality theater and performances for them, but also by mentoring and forming platforms for young and emerging theater artists and creators.

wonderkind grew out of director Kerryn Palmer’s doctorate on designing theater for and with young people. She says, “The show’s highly visual, non-verbal format allows young children to use their own imaginations. During a trial run of the show in 2020, test audiences of children were mesmerized by the visual and auditory spectacles that were created and loved being able to have space to create their own personal stories.

The July season of wonderkind will coincide with the second annual hui of PAYPA (Performing Arts and Young People Aotearoa), a networking event created in partnership with Capital E and Circa Theater to share ideas and expertise among performing arts practitioners working for /by/with young people. The event will take place at the Circa Theater on Friday July 15th at 6pm, is free and open to anyone passionate about PAYPA’s long-term goal of “all children in Aotearoa New Zealand having access to the arts of the high quality scene made specifically for, by and with them.
