The story takes place at the turn of the 20th century during the Belle Epoque, in the Montmartre district of Paris and follows Christian, a young composer who falls in love with the cabaret actress Satine.

The show says audiences will “enter a world of splendor and romance, of mind-blowing excess, glitz, grandeur and glory, where bohemians and aristocrats rub shoulders and revel in electrifying enchantment”.

Similar to the 2001 film, the musical’s score weaves original songs with popular music for the ultimate mash-up extravaganza.

This includes the iconic queer anthems “Toxic”, “Material Girl”, “Bad Romance”, “What’s Love Got to Do with It” and of course “Lady Marmalade”.

Since its Broadway premiere in 2019, it has been nominated for 14 Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Choreography.

The musical will find out if “can-can” sweeps the Tony’s at an upcoming ceremony to coincide with the reopening of Broadway.

It is set to resume production in New York in September 2021, embark on a nationwide tour of the United States and open in Melbourne for the first time.

Red Mill! Musical comedy is based on the groundbreaking 2001 film directed by Baz Luhrmann, which stars Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor.

It received positive reviews from critics and helped rekindle the success of musical films after becoming the first to be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars in 10 years.

The film also spawned the now-iconic track “Lady Marmalade” by Christina Aguilera, P!nk, Lil Kim, Mya and Missy Elliott, with the accompanying video becoming a 2000s cultural reset.
