After 3 sold-out concerts last year, “Full Circle”; ‘A Bard in the Hand’ and the musical ‘Nunsense’, Bembridge Little Theater Club has another fun night in store for you with Noel Coward’s famous play ‘Blithe Spirit’.

Charles Condomine is a typically discreet English gentleman living quietly with his second wife Ruth…until the evening when he decides to hold a seance, simply as research for his new book. An unbeliever, what he does not expect is the appearance of the ghost of his first wife Elvira, a person very different from the tight-laced Ruth who, unable to see the “joyful spirit”, thinks that her husband is going crazy. Elvira, however, is determined to go her own way, with unforeseen consequences for Charles, Ruth, and their maid Edith.

Madame Arcati, the nominally hilarious clairvoyant in charge of the seance, has been described as ‘one of the eccentric great English ladies of the theatre… she rivals Lady Bracknell and Mrs Malaprop’. Does she believe in her own power to summon the spirit world? Do we? Does it matter?

There’s a reason ‘Blithe Spirit’ is one of Coward’s most popular works – it’s still as funny and entertaining today as when it was written: the humor is built on the ridiculousness of the behavior social and human interaction, richly brought to life by BLTC’s talented actors, aided and abetted by the technical and behind-the-scenes teams – because the play involves complex special effects!
