The Actors Fund, National Black Theatre, Manhattan Theater Club and More Receive NYSCA Grants

Dozens of New York-based theater organizations have received grants from the New York State Council on the Arts, including the National Black Theatre, The Actors Fund, the Manhattan Theater Club, and the Roundabout Theater Company. Several grants included commission-only funds, such as the $10,000 Signature Theater Company grant for Branden Jacobs-Jenkins and the $8,000 Bushwick Starr grant for Ryan J. Haddad.

“In an unprecedented and most challenging year for our sector, arts and culture institutions across New York State have continued to show their inspiring resilience, creating and connecting with their communities. in the most innovative way,” said NYSCA Executive Director Mara Manus. “New York is home to countless cultural anchors that fuel our creative economy and New York’s artistic ecosystem.”

Statewide, NYSCA has awarded grants to 1,225 nonprofit organizations, totaling $40 million. The majority of grants were awarded to help with recovery in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, the council also prioritized funding for underrepresented regions and communities as well as small and medium-sized organizations, with $31 million of its total grants going to businesses with operating budgets below $5 million. Additionally, $2.5 million was specifically awarded to identified groups within the African American/Caribbean, Latina, Asian, Native American, LGBTQIA+ and immigrant communities.
