Review of Nunsense by Bembridge Little Theater Club

BEMBRIDGE Little Theater Club surprised the island with a full-scale musical.

Well-known for their scaled-down, intimate performances, the band pushed the boat out with their production of Dan Goggin’s Nunsense.

The story follows a hopeless group of nuns as they desperately try to raise money to bury their sadly deceased sisters.

Despite the macabre-sounding premise, the performance was a wild ride of an adventure that demonstrated good comedy and musicality.

The whole cast had good energy and stage presence – something you would expect from the Bembridge Little Theater Club.

The choreography of the numbers, although sometimes overlooked by some on stage (although we won’t say if you don’t!) was clear and very effective – made even better by the inventive use of hidden props and costumes under the nuns’ habits.

The vocals were cohesive and made a cheerful rendition of Dan Goggin’s catchy tunes, accompanied by the small, but immaculate, band of the band.

Hanna Emily Nixon, who provided a lot of energy and humor to her country music number I Could Have Gone to Nashville, and Bryony Bishop, who delivered a truly stunning performance of So You Want to be a Nun, were particularly remarkable.

Bryony displayed energy, humor and versatility of voice, singing both as herself and as a nun puppet she produced under her costume.

Bryony’s energy was also echoed by Ruth Anderson and Hanna in the energetic number The Drive-In which dazzled the audience with tight harmony.

Libby Pike led the cast as mother superior.

Libby was hilarious in the role, making a particularly dedicated effort during the scene where she accidentally got high from fumes from a mysterious bottle.

This level of comedy was not lacking in the rest of the cast, who all went to great lengths to ensure the backgrounds of the scenes were lively and engaging – something audiences always notice.

The Bembridge Little Theater Club seem to be a particularly friendly and tight-knit group, showing that they can perform large and small plays alike.

Notice to the talents of the island, here is a group that could ensure your next step!
