Local artist Kate Normington has brought the love of musical theater back to Theater On The Square.
The talented Inanda resident recently took the stage for her musical review Storm In AB Cup from April 21-30, leaving audiences wanting more.
Storm In AB Cup is based on an original concept by Rowan and Drew Bakker for the Redhill School Arts Festival three years ago, a humorous evening of the ups and downs of a life on stage around the world magic of musical theatre.
Directed by Russel Savadier, with musical direction by Rowan Bakker, Normington performs his jaw-dropping numbers from Nunsense to Sister Act, Cabaret, Camelot, Into the Woods, Funny Girl and Hairspray, to name a few.
“It’s a fun, light-hearted retrospective looking back at old shows I’ve done, tongue-in-cheek memories accompanied by beautiful songs,” she said.
Normington added that the show encouraged redemptive ideas of love and hope; the predominant themes are about love, saying goodbye to lost loves, hello to the warmth of new ones, and still being there after surviving a pandemic in one way or another.
“Sophisticated lyrics and melody reside in the songs chosen by stalwarts like Jule Stern, Cole Porter, Stephen Sondheim and Kander and Eb, their wary lyrics and haunting melody doing most of the work for us.
“These authors wrote about desire, redemption, love, and triumph even in the most difficult of circumstances.”
Normington added that a large number of people who love musical theater will have enjoyed the production as its reminiscences of the shows that South African audiences have enjoyed locally and abroad.
“We gave them a different vision and hope they will be revived in the hearts of the public.”
